This section moves beyond the
four skills to look at other testing procedures, some well established,
others of more recent provenance. Cloze and C-tests have been in use for
a number of years and the first sub-section considers their purpose and
efficacy. Grammar tests and translation tasks are widely used in university
language programmes and approaches to these are considered in subsequent
sections. Finally, we turn our attention to the use of projects, portfolios
and reviews as increasingly popular alternative methods of assessing students'
language.
